The Gangotri Tapovan Trek is not a very rigorous and can be effortlessly negotiable by non mountaineers too. The Gaumukh Tapovan trek is a very rewarding trek in India trailing along the beaten track surrounded by coniferous pine trees towards Chirbasa, which offers a clear outlook of the Bhagirathi Peak. Beyond Chirbasa the terrain becomes really desolate – in fact, lots of trekkers refer to it as the “Arctic Tundra”. From Chirbasa the trek brich at Bhojbasa. From Bhojbasa the trek leads you to Lanka and then to Gaumukh. Bharal – herds of Blue mountain goats are a common sight here on mountain ridges. Gaumukh Glacier which is just four kilometers(4Kms.) from Bhojwasa can be explored in the way. From Gaumukh to Tapovan the climb is steep, and as you climb, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes more and more clear giving you the view of majestic great Himalaya.
The best seasons to visit this place are, summer and autumn March to June and September to November respectively.
Our journey will take place from Delhi, in first phase we will reach to camp Kuflon. From here we will explore the temple and river in Chirbasa. Thereafter, a short drive will take us to Bhojbasa, where the panoramic views of sunset will rejuvenate us physically as well as mentally. Then we will continue to visit the glaciers of Ganga and Gangotri. Hereafter, we will start for Tapovan where we will be staying at the camp site. We will rest there and share our experiences. Again a trek takes us to Chirbasa and then move to Kuflon basics, which is last destination of our tour.
Itinerary Gaumukh Tapoven Trek
Day 01: Delhi to Camp Kuflon(1520m)
On the very first day we will Board Dehradun Shatabdi train leaving Delhi at 6:55am. Arrive Hardwar at 11:20 am and get transferred to Kuflon, which is 11 kms near to the Dodital. Thereafter, we will take a drive for Uttarkashi, from here a 5 hrs drive will take us to the valley of the Assi Ganga. Overnight stay follows with dinner at the hotel of Kuflon.
Day 02: Camp Kuflon Basics to Chirbasa (3600m) 4 hr drive and 4 hr walk
On this day, after having breakfast, we will take a drive of 4 hrs to reach the holy shrine of Gangotri (3000m). We will explore the temple and will start a 4 hr walk up towards Gaumukh, the source of the river Ganges. This trail keeps following the river and just short of Chirbasa, we will get the astonishing views of the Bhagirathi Peaks. Chirbasa which literally means “the home of pine” is now a cluster of shops and some pine trees. From here we will walk down from the main track and setup at camp side close to the river. Enjoy our dinner at night in camps.
Day 03: Chirbasa to Bhojbasa (3800m) 3hrs
We will take a 3 hrs walk, after having breakfast. Reach the campsite of Bhojbasa(3800m), a home of birch and setup camp. Take an evening stroll to one of the high points close by for better adjustment of the body to the surroundings. We may get a chance to see a group of ibexes or beautiful sunset, so don’t forget to carry your cameras.
Day 04: Bhojbasa to Tapovan (4450 m) 5-6 hrs
After having breakfast, we will walk about 2hrs to reach Gaumukh (4000m), which is said to be the source of the Ganges. Here we can spend enough time in admiring the beauty and the power of the nature. It’s a visual treat and an experience in itself to watch the flowing Ganga and the Gangotri glacier. From here, we will cross the glacier and start the steep ascent to reach the beautiful meadow of Tapovan, which will take 3hrs from Gaumukh.
Day 05: Rest day at Tapovan (4450m)
On this day, we will take rest at Tapovan, which has a lush green meadow dotted with wild flowers right at the foot of the giant Shivling. We can spend the whole day by moving around the campsite, or visiting the sadhus, reading a book or just admiring the mighty peaks of Bhagirathi, Shivling, Meru and others. Overnight stay follows at Tapovan in the hotel.
Day 06: Tapovan to Chirbasa (3600m) 5hrs
After taking an early breakfast, we will commence the trek back to reach Chirbasa in about 5 hrs. Overnight stay at camp accompanied with hot dinner.
Day 07: Chirbasa to Gangotri to Camp Kuflon Basics. 2-3 hrs walk and 4 hrs drives
After breakfast, we will continue to hike to reach Gangotri (4hrs) and board the waiting vehicles to drive back to the camp Kuflon Basics for the hot shower, hot food and the campfire.
Day 08: Camp Kuflon Basics to Haridwar to Delhi
On this day we will have an easy start, let our aching muscles rest. Take an early lunch and drive for 5hrs to Haridwar and get back to Haridwar to board evening Shatabdi to reach Delhi by 10:30 in the night.
