The sub-tropical forests of the Himalayan foot hills, including its vanishing grasslands, make up the heart of what is known as the ‘Terai Arc Landscape’. This vital forest corridor makes an enticing heritage destination because of its rich and diverse flora and fauna. On the western end of the Terai Arc lies the picturesque Corbett National Park, India’s premier Tiger Reserve.
Wild Tusker Lodge is located on the north-eastern periphery of the Park, ensconced next to a tiny hamlet in the foot hills. Inspired by the legendary ‘daak-bungalows’ from a bygone era, the lodge offers its visitors with a unique opportunity to authentically connect with nature and explore the wilderness.
The Lodge nestles at a height of apprx. 2500 ft. in the Sal forests of the Kumaon foothills of Himalayas.
The hillside surrounding the lodge also has a rich and varied birdlife .A scientific study conducted by researchers of Wildlife and Ornithology at AMU has identified more than 120 bird species just in this patch of forest around the lodge.
The numerous walking trails near the Lodge make it a unique place. Short walks from here take you down to picturesque streams, which are important sources of water in summers for all wild animals. On these trails, tigers, leopards and wild elephants are regularly sighted.
Pertinently, the Lodge is located at a short distance from Kathkinaul village, where Jim Corbett tracked and shot the famous ‘Man-eater of Mohan’. The walk from the lodge to this village takes you through one of the most enchanting jungle landscapes of the Terai forests; it is of this area that Jim Corbett wrote “I have never seen a greater variety or a greater wealth of bloom than the forests on that hill had to show. The beautiful white butterfly orchids were in greatest profusion, and every second tree of any size appeared to have decked itself out with them. It was here that I first saw one of the rarest birds in this part of world the mountain craig martin”.
The Lodge offers six (two room) comfortable, elegantly furnished cottages. The rooms have been built to provide a clear view of the surrounding landscape, with minimum disturbance.
The property itself has generous open spaces and greenery due to which cheetal, sambhar, friendly tuskers and wild-boar often frequent the compound. You may even sight these animals while sitting in the verandah of your cottage or theChowgarh restaurant.
As a part of our commitment towards the environment six cottages of WTL rely on solar energy for electricity and solar water heating. To reduce our energy consumption and carbon foot-print we use LED lights and lanterns (solar-powered) extensively.
For your comfort, we offer air-conditioning (for a limited time) at night and during the day, through a canopied green-power generator.
To interfere least with nature we want to maintain the Lodge as an extension of the surrounding forests and haven’t used any bright lights. As night falls silence descends, nature takes over. And you can experience the magic of the fabled Indian jungles.
Our main aim is not only to provide excitement and adventure to visitors, but to promote a brand of ‘educational tourism’ which acquaints them with deeper issues of conservation nature and wildlife protection.
Trekking: As a tribute to Corbett and his numerous spell binding stories that eloquently capture the beauty this region, the WTL seeks to give a flavour of his adventure to its guests. As a part of this we arrange tailor-made treks in these adjoining forests along the Corbett National Park. More than half a dozen such special treks have been earmarked for our guests.
Jungle Safari: Morning and evening open jeep safaris inside the National Park are arranged on any of the three gates Park. Other than this you can also undertake jeep safaris along the surrounding hillsides and Reserved Forest. This includes drives to Ramganga River near Marchula, or along the Kosi River to the Kumaria forest.
Angling: You can trek and drive to the Ramganga river near Marchula village, for Mahasher angling. Mahasher is one of the biggest fresh water fish in this part of the world.
Bird Watching: The forests around the Bhakrakot village are a bird-watchers paradise. No birding enthusiast’s trip to Corbett is complete without a visit to this place. So, indulge in some thrilling bird-watching in and around the lodge. As a part of our efforts on nature conservation, WTL offers guests to put feeds for birds.
More Stuff: Browse through our collection of books and wildlife magazines at the library. This includes a comprehensive collection of Corbett’s books and biographies.
Relax and catch up on outdoor and indoor games like cards, carrom-board and volleyball in the midst of natural surroundings.
WTL has special wildlife slideshows through a large screen projector.
Creative Splash- For those who want to vent their creative streak, they can unwind by painting. You can paint your own cards, or simply splash nature’s colours on your tear sheet.
